Simplexity

Elizabeth Anscombe criticizes Kant for ignoring the importance of a relevant description of human action.  She points out that he assumes coming up with a relevant description is non-problematic for moral philosophy.  But as a matter of fact, different persons will describe the same action differently according to whether or not they possess virtue.  That is, according to their ability to recognize the good in concrete situations.

One could regard a particular bucket of sand as rather simple or as rather complex, based upon one's regard for the purpose of that bucket.  If you think someone scooped or filled it without much of a thought for how the granules are located with respect to each other, then one will find a simple description for the bucket.  In fact, one might find a mathematical equation that would prescind from the consideration of the exact location of each grain and not take into account the variations in the sizes of the granules.  If one thought of the bucket of sand as a kind of work of art (that is, sand in a glass container with layers having different colors, arranged like the colors of the spectrum) then the complexity in one's description would increase.  If one had the ability to scan the precise size and location of each crystal  and thought the mathematical description of these sizes and locations were a kind of code, then one would regard the bucket as being complex.

Regard for complexity presupposes a relevant description, and that description is always in terms of what the thing -- be it a bucket, a human body, or a brain -- is good for.  But that thing that it is good for is, in comparison to the complexity, something simple.  So it might be better to talk about simplexity rather than complexity.  But then again, someone already invented that word...

In any case, my point (I think) is that we must practice the virtue of regard for what human life is good for when we talk about the complexity of the human body (or just the brain, which is a current fad).  We need to acknowledge that, methodologically speaking, some presumed answer to the simple question of what our life is for comes before the pursuit of the answer to the question of how life may involve complexity.

Kant, Hume and others have systematically analyzed and categorized the role of experience, principle of induction,and categories of rational thought, only to leave the "spookiness" of "things-in-themselves untouched. You, Aristotle, Heidegger and Sartre share a commonality of opinion to explain that spookiness. From Aristotle's use of non-efficient causes, to Heidegger's "being" which is always "towards" something (Dasein), to Sartre's being-for-self, being-for-others, etc. are attempts to simplify the complexity of emergent behavior in this manner. My reductionist instinct is not happy with any of it!!! Purpose, goals, human emotions, final causes,complexity can ALL be explained by a common framework of pure conceptual mechanical abstract mathematics. The technique is the same as for the abstract foundations of physics and string theory, only one deals with dual spaces, conscious groups, thought-orbits instead of planetary or electron orbits. The Platonic forms are on offer but it requires some heavy lifting to understand it. (And you thought Heideggerian jargon was tough.)Conceptual mathematics can even tell you why a joke is funny. In the end, it is all reductionist mechanics and no more.

If your argument is that math justifies reductionism, then I will point out a couple of things.

First of all, Heidegger was a good enough mathematician to serve on doctoral committees for dissertations by math PhDs.

Secondly, I think reductionists are pretty naive about where science comes from. It comes from a scientist acting for a purpose. Reductionists forget the obvious because they are animated by a sometimes feverish desire to come up with something new.

Calling the other person's position "spooky" is to be dismissive. And it may be a mask for ignorance. What's so spooky about Aristotle's theory of induction?

Math doesn't have to justify anything, because it is true in-itself by axiomatic definition (a priori as it were). Reductionism is just a systematic way of abstraction. All discourse is abstraction of some sort. Your notion of "purpose" with respect to science (or anything else for that matter) is just another functional construction which as I indicated is part of the reductionist strategy without going through all the bother of naming each sub-unit. In other words, it is layered whence comes emergence. All possible actions, thoughts, and patterns are amenable to the same analytic and constructive analysis which I will simply call reductionism. The use of the term "spookyness" is not dismissive but refering to Kant's distinguishing things in themselves from phenomena, thus making a metaphysical distinction between intrinsic and relational properties of substances. Einstein also used the term in regard to the EPR paradox; to wit, "spooky action at a distance" meaning that objects beyond light speed causal separation are non-the-less correlated with each other - an intrinsically quantum mechanical phenomenon.

Integral to Dembski's idea of specified complexity (SC) is the notion that something extrinsic to evolution is the source of the specification in how it develops. He compares SC to the message sent by space aliens in the movie "Contact." Hi Tim, I am posting my reply here, because the great blogmeister won't let me put it all in a comment. Me thinks I get your point: is it that we can name and chimps can't, so therefore we are of greater value than chimps? Naming is something above and beyond what a chimp can do, right? In other words, you are illustrating the point I am making (if I catch your drift). My argument is only a sketch, but I think adding the ability to name names, as it were, is still not enough to make the argument seem cogent. For one can still ask why we prefer being able to name over other skills had by animals but not by humans. The objector would demand a more convincing reason. The answer I have in mind is, to put it briefly, that there is something infinite about human beings in comparison with the subhuman. While listening to a recorded lecture on Quine's Two Dogmas of Empiricism, it occurred to me that every rule is in a way, a fact about the world. Think about baseball: from the p.o.v. of an individual player, a baseball rule is not a thing but a guide for acting and interpreting the actions of others.  But this rule, like the action it guides, is part of a concrete individual --i.e., part of an institution that has come into existence at a particular place and time, has endured and  may eventually go out of existence.  The baseball rule, as a feature of that individual, is likewise individual.  The term "baseball rule," on the one hand, links us to a unique cultural event; it can, on the other hand, name a certain type of being.  In this way, it transgresses the boundary between proper and common noun.
